So those LUTs will work best on Rec.709 in a DR YRGB timeline. If we go back and look at 3rd party 3D LUTs (including Filmconvert), many of them are created for Rec.709 and likely for a RGB color manage workflow. However in the sRGB gamut, the color trace for the Blue chroma is getting a bit outside of the sRGB gamut range and so the blue colors may not accurately be displayed on an sRGB monitor. The adjusted colors of the picture will look correct on all 3 color space. For example, picture #2 shows the gamma range of sRGB, P3, and rec709 (outermost band). A DCI-P3 will display accurately on a DCI-P3 display if the colors are within the DCI-P3 range. This is true and the same for every other color space. If your colors are inside the rec.709 color space range as you adjust them, then your image will be Rec709 compliant ON A CALIBRATED Rec709 monitor. It just means that the color are within the color safe range as defined by the rules of broadcasting for rec709. Being broadcast color safe does not mean rec709. Colors that are out of the color space are not accurately displayed on a calibrated Rec.709 display, and may be considered out of the legal color range for that color space. As you adjust the color wheel, contrast, sat, etc to correct the picture, the color gamut changes on the scope and should be within its band. You see this by using the chromaticity scope in Resolve 16, for example. The colors for Rec709 to be rec709 should fall within its color gamut range. First think of what Rec709 (or whatever - DCI-P3, 2020, etc.) is? It is just a color space. So okay, let's do away with any 3rd party luts and just say you have some footage that you brought in from camera, for ease of discussion, you have a log footage you took using a log profile. You did contrast, stauration all with color wheels and curves. Imagine you color corrected log footage without aplying a Rec709 lut.

My question is more how to convert ANY (!) Footage to Rec709.

Alternatively, give film convert a call or email them to ask the same question. If you want to treat the profile as a corrector, then you could (not saying it will be correct) put a color space transform with input as 'Timeline' for color space and gamma, then the output as 'Rec709' for colorspace and 'Gamma 2.2 or 2.4' for gamma. Just drop the profile you like and then in adjust to taste with correction node placed before it. When you buy film convert, you're buying convenience so you don't have to do much grading. Once applied, they are not meant to be reprocessed after. You correct in nodes before applying such LUTs.

But what I want to learn is how to convert an already high contrast image converted into a Rec709.įirst of all, I want to say that most film convert profiles are not correction LUTs. But all I find is how to convert 'log to Rec709'.
